Tyson Langelaar
Team Canada Speed Skater / 2022 Olympian
Career
Born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Tyson began speed skating at the
age of seven. As soon as he put on his first pair of skates, he knew he
wanted to represent Canada at the Winter Olympic Games. By the age of
fifteen, he was skating his way to multiple provincial titles in both long and
short track. Tyson was an all-around athlete but decided to focus solely on
skating and his Olympic dream. At the age of 18, he moved to Calgary to
train at the Olympic Oval. While it has been a sacrifice to be away from
family and his hometown of Winnipeg, Tyson achieved his childhood
dream of wearing the maple leaf at the Olympics by 23 years old.Reflecting on his career, Tyson realized his story was meant to be. His dad
was born in the Netherlands, where speed skating was invented. Tyson grew up in Winnipeg, a city known for its dominance in speed skating. As
a child, Tyson had the privilege to watch and admire skating legends like
Cindy Klassen, Clara Hughes, Mike Ireland and many others. Tyson has
worked closely with former National Team skater, Tyler Williamson
Derraugh, who coached Tyson at the provincial level and during Tyson’s
first two Junior World Championships. Looking back, Tyson believes that
maybe he didn’t find speed skating, but that speed skating found him.
